I'm no licensed nutritionist or official weight loss counselor, but I think I've got a bit of common sense advice on staying healthy for anyone who is interested (and if you're reading this, I'll assume you're interested). One of my number one pet peeves is people who claim to be dieting or trying to lose weight but go around drinking their calories. By that, I mean people who down a six-pack of regular soda every day (or even one can of regular soda -- that stuff has like 10 teaspoons of sugar per can!) or think "getting a coffee" means swinging by Starbucks for a 500 CALORIE frappucino. Yes, that bold all-caps was me yelling. I'm not kidding about the 500 calorie part either. Anyone noticed what Britney's thighs look like these days? Might it have something to do with the ever-present frappucino in her hand??? Word on the street is that the girl had to use a body double for her last music video, and I'm pretty sure she has Starbucks to thank for that.
Seriously, people. I can feel my blood pressure rising as I think of the people who do this, and then 5 minutes later drone on about how they wish they could fit back into their old skinny jeans. Drives me up the freaking wall. I'm not much into governmental paternalism, but I think whole milk/full sugar/whip cream frappucinos and similar drinks should be illegal. Don't get me wrong...I know it's hard to resist temptation when you're trying to lose weight or stay in shape. But there are a few no-brainers when it comes to your health, and downing drinks like that is one of them. I could go on about this kinda stuff for hours.
Anyway, enough ranting and raving and talking smack about Britney Spears. On to something more pleasant and a bit of useful info. If you do feel the need for a little Starbucks treat from time to time (and I do mean "treat" -- this should be considered a snack -- it's not like a calorie-free diet drink or something), those in the know will tell you that you can get a small (S'bucks calls it "tall") flavored latte for only 90 calories. But you have to remember the three specifics that should go with this low-cal treat: skim milk, sugar free flavor syrup, and no whip cream.
Just recently, our friends over at that little coffee establishment have made things a bit easier. Instead of rolling up in there and trying to remember all that stuff, you can just say "skinny." That's right, under Starbucks' new ordering system, "skinny" means skim milk, sugar free syrup, and no whip. It's awesome. My personal favorite for an afternoon coffee treat is the tall skinny caramel. It's got 90 calories, 14 grams of carbs, 9 grams of protein, and no fat. And lots of deliciousness. I think they've also got mocha, vanilla, hazelnut, and cinnamon dolce.
So the next time you're in the mood for a fancy little Starbucks drink, try the new "skinny" ordering system. And remember, friends don't let friends drink frappucinos.

Kate,
You post made me laugh..I love Starbucks! However the Starbucks in NJ and NY only use 2% milk now for the regular orders. This is a recent change and a little better than whole milk, I guess! I like the skinny option now, too - easier to order. :)

Seriously, everything about Brit Brit Spears is JUST WRONG. If I was Starbucks I would not sell drinks to her because she is corrupting their brand. For reals.
Besides, who doesn't order their drink with non fat milk these days? I thought that was as much of a DUH as remembering to wear underwear.

How often do we hear complaints from the police investigating some crime that they are facing a "wall of silence", that "someone out there" has vital evidence which out of fear or a misplaced sense of loyalty they are refusing to report? Have the courage to come forward is the message: your public duty comes before your personal concerns.
